Equine Focus In
Agriculture Ed.

In our Equine Education Program, we set goals by determining each individual's experience level and educational purposes, whether for 4-H, FFA, or other Equine industry career pursuits. We ensure the abilities of the individual and the horse/pony are matched for the utmost safety and positive learning experience for both in the partnership.

Instruction in riding disciplines and developing safe horse sense, in theory, have a lot to do with understanding the horse itself. Participants should be able to earn the horse's trust. We teach our participants knowledge about the horse, from the ground up, and what horses understand about body language and the herd mentality. We demonstrate how to bond with the animal so that the horse learns to trust the handler/rider and a long-term friendship is developed.

We help each rider achieve the skills to complete the California 4-H equine testing standards. We also teach participants about maintaining the health of horses with the proper nutrition, veterinary care, hoof, and body care, as well as the importance of thorough training, socialization, and desensitization of the horse. At VHS, we provide a foundation of equine knowledge that ensures a fulfilling learning experience that we hope will encourage future horse ownership and participation in equine sports in the numerous equine disciplines. Some may develop the confidence to pursue a career in the equine fields. We offer internship positions for high school and college students for community service or academic credit.
